5 ways to safeguard your identity while shopping online

1. Only shop on trustworthy websites

Ensure that the websites you use are reputable and have a good security track record. Never buy anything online using your credit card from a site that doesn’t have SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption installed. You’ll know if the site has SSL because the URL for the site will start with HTTPS—instead of just HTTP. An icon of a locked padlock will appear, typically to the left of the URL in the address bar.

2. Use different passwords for different online shopping websites

Make sure your passwords are strong and unique to reduce the chances of anyone else being able to crack it.

3. Avoid oversharing of personal information

Some online retailers may ask for your birthday to be able to better tailor their services to you, or perhaps offer you birthday specials. However, if crooks get them and your credit card number, they can do a lot of damage. The more scammers know, the easier it is to steal your identity. When possible, default to giving up as little personal data as possible.

4. Don’t shop on public WiFi

Since shopping online requires sensitive personal information such as bank account or credit card details, don’t take the risk. It’s much safer to shop on a secured Wi-Fi, preferably from the comfort of your home or other trusted network.
